Should I Install a Deadbolt on My Front Door?

There are many simple things you can do to boost your home security. They don’t mean that you have to go and buy the top-of-the-line security kit even though the quality is important. Not everyone has access to that kind of money or even the money to pay the monthly fee.

There are really creative ways of adding security to your home, but sometimes we forget that the simplest things can make the biggest difference. For example, according to most locksmiths, installing a deadbolt lock is probably the best preventative measure you can take against burglary.

The Importance of Deadbolts

Locksmiths say that if you don’t have a deadbolt, it doesn’t matter how advanced your security system is, there will always be a way to break in. A deadbolt is simply a lock that extends a solid steel bolt into the doorjamb and through the strike plate of a doorframe. It’s probably the simplest concept anyone could ever think of as far as a locking mechanism, but it’s the most effective.

Deadbolts are strong. They’re extremely strong. If you have a deadbolt on your door, it’s virtually impossible for an intruder can kick your door in. There are different types of deadbolts. Some of them use keys; some of them don’t. Some can only be accessed on the inside, while others can be accessed from both sides of the door. People have different preferences as far as deadbolts are concerned, and each style provided security one way or another. However, according to locksmiths, the safest deadbolt is the style that you can’t access from the outside. These deadbolts are usually operated by a single twist knob that has to be turned from the inside of the door. Once that deadbolt is locked, there’s no way to open the door without untwisting that knob. So, even if you don’t have a well-functioning door lock, adding a deadbolt can certainly make up the difference.

Why is it so important to have a deadbolt?

According to research conducted by the FBI in 2013, 1.9 million burglaries happened that year resulting in $4.5 billion in property loss. That’s a hefty industry that burglars do not want to let go of.

Imagine nearly 2 million burglaries. They happen everywhere. It doesn’t matter what kind of neighborhood you live in or how much security you have – whether it be none or a fully-enclosed gated community. Burglars will make their way in. In fact, of all 1.9 million burglaries, 59% were the result of forced entry. That means that burglars were able to force their way inside homes. Maybe they kicked the door in. Maybe they picked the locks. They tried it, and they got in. No matter how they did it, there is probably a way they could’ve been stopped. You must remember that burglaries aren’t always high-tech and fancy. They’re not always so grand. But for you, even a small break in can have devastating effects.

So, if there was one thing you can do to protect your home now, it’s to call the nearest locksmith and have a deadbolt installed on your front door. Think about having one installed on the back door as well. It’s a one-time payment that you’ll never have to deal with again. But, after your locksmith has installed the deadbolts, you need to remember to always have them locked. If you prefer that the deadbolts are locked while you’re not at home, you might want to invest in a deadbolt that can be locked from the outside. You’ll need a key to do this.
While there might be a possibility of picking the external keyhole of the deadbolt, at least you are making it more difficult for an intruder to get inside your home. They might even give up once they see that your situation is secure. In that case, your deadbolt has done its job of keeping your home safer.
